    First-time manager training for organizations

Prepare first-time managers for real people work

Give newly promoted managers, supervisors, and team leads a practical foundation for expectations, one-on-ones, feedback, documentation, difficult conversations, and knowing when to involve HR.

    Take the readiness quiz

The quiz helps you find the right manager skill to practice next, whether you are stepping into people leadership or supporting a manager cohort.

    Manager outcomes

    • Set clear expectations

Managers gain a shared starting point for priorities, boundaries, and follow-through.

    • Handle difficult conversations

They practice clear language for feedback and difficult conversations before pressure arrives.

    • Know when to involve HR

They recognize sensitive situations sooner and bring focused questions to HR before acting.

    The transition into management

New managers need practice before pressure arrives.

For HR, L&D, People Operations, and department leaders, the challenge is practical: a newly promoted manager may be responsible for real employee conversations before anyone has given them a common way to prepare. First-time manager training offers that starting point. Responsible AI belongs alongside the work as a supervised aid, with confidentiality, fairness, and human accountability in view.

Managers are asked to lead before they have practiced

Organizations often promote people because they know the work, then ask them to lead real employee situations before they have practiced the role. They need a shared foundation for expectations, one-on-ones, feedback, documentation, boundaries, and knowing when to ask HR for help.

AI should support preparation, not judgment

AI can organize an agenda, suggest a first draft, or help rehearse a difficult conversation. It cannot assess an employee, interpret a policy, or decide what is fair. Managers review the work and own the decision.

Sponsors need a shared standard for people work

HR and L&D leaders need managers to share a common language for expectations, feedback, documentation, and escalation. Training gives cohorts time to practice the conversations and routines they will use, with responsible AI boundaries that keep preparation supervised and employment decisions human.

    Manager capability first

Build the skills people leadership demands

Give a manager cohort one practical foundation for the work of leading people. The workshop helps newly promoted managers, supervisors, and team leads set expectations, lead useful one-on-ones, give feedback, document clearly, handle difficult conversations, and know when to involve HR. Responsible AI appears as supervised support for preparation and rehearsal, with human judgment in charge.

    First-Time Manager Training

    What managers practice

    • Set expectations, boundaries, and priorities from the start
    • Run useful one-on-ones and give clear, timely feedback
    • Document observable facts in plain, factual language
    • Prepare for difficult conversations and know when to involve HR

    Responsible AI practice

    • Plan one-on-one agendas, questions, agreements, and follow-up
    • Rehearse feedback and difficult conversations with fictional scenarios
    • Review drafts for tone, accuracy, and possible bias
    • Keep names, personnel details, and sensitive case facts out of AI tools
    • Use a clear stop point when a decision would affect a person

    About Marilyn

Still doing the work she teaches

Marilyn brings more than 30 years of experience in employee and labor relations and more than 25 years of HR leadership, including 18 years as VP of HR for a nonprofit. She left the VP role to consult and teach. Today she works as an HR consultant, providing fractional HR support and practical responsible AI guidance for managers, leaders, and business owners who handle HR along with everything else. She is still doing the work she teaches.

Her training starts where managers and HR teams actually get stuck: setting expectations, giving feedback that lands, documenting so it holds up later, preparing for the conversation nobody wants to have, and knowing the point where AI should stop. The goal is language and routines someone can use on a Tuesday afternoon, not theory to file away.

The through-line is simple. AI can draft. Humans still decide. When that partnership is built well, the organization gets real value: managers who show up prepared, employees who get answers in hours instead of weeks, fewer costly mistakes, and time returned to the work only people can do. Marilyn helps companies put the guardrails in place so AI makes the employee experience better, not riskier.
